Pegu Club Cocktail
26 Nov 07 34
This is a fairly old cocktail which is just now being rediscovered. Dating back to the 1920's this was the house cocktail at the "Pegu Club" in Rangoon. I often use this drink to help people who claim they don't like gin realize that there really isn't anything to be afraid of.
Piña Colada Cocktail
17 Mar 08 33
It was on August 15, 1954, that Ramon "Monchito" Marrero Perez first introduced the Pina Colada to the customers of the Beachcomber Bar at the Caribe Hilton in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is said that he spent three months working on it until he finally felt he had captured "the sunny, tropical flavor of Puerto Rico in a glass."

The sidecar is a classic cocktail which most bartenders know, but seems to be rarely ordered. Part of this is because it is poorly made, and more often than not made with sour mix instead of fresh ingredients. Properly made this drink should be made with cognac (or brandy), Cointreau, and fresh lemon juice. There are however a variety of ways these ingredients can be combined, the secret is how to do so in a way that presents a perfect balance.

Originally made with Cognac, before Phylloxera vastatrix destroyed grape vines across France, now widely made with rye whiskey, the Sazerac is the quintessential New Orleans cocktail. since in preparation and complex in flavor profile, it is not to be missed.
Black Feather Cocktail
11 Feb 08 30
This is a unique little cocktail that I created a few years ago. It is an excellent way to illustrate the the valuable role that dry vermouth can play in a properly balanced drink. I've found that it is easily enjoyed by both experienced cocktail drinkers as well as those who haven't quite built up their palate for spirits.
Gin and Tonic Cocktail
24 Mar 08 29
The Gin & Tonic is of course an extremely simple drink to make, but is that any reason to avoid it? Heck I don’t think so, especially when you are using one of the new premium brands of tonic water coming onto the market, like “Q Tonic”.

The daiquiri is a historic and iconic cocktail and John F. Kennedy's favorite cocktail. It's simplicity disguises what can be a complex and delicious cocktail when made correctly.
Bloody Mary Cocktail
5 Jun 07 27
The Bloody Mary represents a drink where everybody is welcome to test out their creativity just a little to see what sorts of unique twists they can add to this long-time classic. Start with the basic recipe and then see where that leads you.
Rye Old Fashioned Cocktail
27 Nov 10 26
The Old Fashioned Cocktail was most likely originally made with rye whiskey. Test your favorite bartenders knowledge and technique with this simple but often badly made cocktail.

An old and unfortunately forgotten cocktail, and one of the first which I learned which required the mysterious ingredient "orange bitters". It is a great drink to use to introduce people to "gin" cocktails. If you use "orange curacao" instead of Grand Marnier turns this into a "curled" version.
Ramos Gin Fizz Cocktail
15 Apr 08 25
The use of egg white and cream in this version of the fizz creates a unique experience. Velvet with a citrus background and a bubbly pop, the Ramos Gin Fizz.
Añejo Highball Cocktail
16 Jun 08 24
The Anejo Highball was created by famed mixologist Dale DeGroff to pay homage to the celebrated bartenders of Cuba from back in the twenties and thirties. Dale says that this drink illustrates how necessary it is for the bartender to understand the role that each and every ingredient plays in the cocktails that they make.

French 75 Cocktail

The French 75 is a delightful champagne cocktail, which first appeared in "The Savoy Cocktail Book" by Harry Craddock in 1930. The drink get's it's name from the 75 millimeter field gun used in the first world war.

Perfect for National Coffee Day! No surprise, the Irish Coffee was invented in Ireland, but perhaps owes its popularity to the Buena Vista in San Francisco. In fact I was recently in Ireland, and at a cocktail lounge there they listed the "Buena Vista Irish Coffee" on their menu.

Cachaça is a Brazilian spirit made from sugar cane, and therefore is similar in nature to a rum, or more correctly a rhum agricole. While not as popular a cocktail ingredient as rum it still holds a lot of potential. I created the "Festa" to try to represent a relaxing and refreshing Spring cocktail, but with enough flavor components to make it interesting as well.

There are times when we may have conceptual problems with different ingredients. I ran into this with Jagermeister. I just couldn't take it seriously, at least not until a friend challenged me to try to make a classically styled cocktail with it. The result was the Mahogany which, quite frankly, I think works pretty well at properly showcasing Jagermeister in a cocktail that doesn't appear to be created by or for frat boys.
Cocktail Foam - Jamie Boudreau - The Vessel 75
11 Jul 07 23
An original creation by Jamie Boudreau, host of Raising the Bar on Small Screen Network, the Vessel 75 utilizes a maple syrup foam to add sweetness and mouth feel. It is a beautiful cocktail with a nod to the classic Old Fashioned.
East India House Cocktail
20 Apr 09 22
It was in in "The Gentleman's Companion, by Charles H. Baker Jr. that I first encountered the "East India House Cocktail", and immediately fell in love with it. It has a wonderful flavor and is what I refer to as an "approachable" cocktail which would be suitable to both beginners as well as experienced drinkers. Mr. Baker describes the drink as: "Being one for any man's book, & garnered in The Royal Bombay Yacht Club, India (1932)."
How to Drink Absinthe
14 Dec 07 22
The allure of the "green fairy" is probably due in part to the illicit aura which surrounds this spirit, both in the wide-spread myths of its hallucinogenic properties, and that it is banned in many countries around the world. As the truth get's around that it isn't a hallucinogen, and as the bans gradually get lifted, we'll once again be able to enjoy absinthe for just it's taste, and the ritual associated with its service.
