During a busy visit to Seattle, Bill Samuel's Jr., President of Maker's Mark Bourbon Whisky, was kind enough to sit down for an interview with Robert at Daniel's Broiler. Bill talks about how he wasn't the best rocket scientist and the real reason his dad made him President of Maker's Mark back in 1975. Also, after a great lunch at Zig Zag Café with members of the Washington State Bartenders Guild, Bill seems very complimentary of the talent behind the bar in Seattle.

Robert,
Thanks for branching out with these interviews. I enjoyed this as well as the interview with the Plymouth guys. I hope you’ll continue to do more.
Best,

Excellent interview. As a newbie to the wonderful world of cocktails I find that I am spending quite a bit of time and money discerning where my tates lie among the base spirits. My search for my favorite bourbon is no exception. I have tried Maker’s Mark and enjoyed it very much. This interview has helped me decide to keep a bottle of this whiskey in my cabinet from now on. There may be many good American whiskies out there, but hearing Mr. Samuel’s comments on balancing his whiskey within the world of mixology has put Maker’s Mark just over the top in my book. I am growing in my appreciation of a good Manhattan and plan on enjoying it with Maker’s Mark from now on.
Glad you enjoyed the interview and have gotten the chance to learn a little more about Makers Mark! I find that understanding a little bit about the people behind the product helps you gain some valuable insights into what makes the product, and the company tick. It was a lot of fun to meet with Bill and share these moments with you.

So refreshing to see a whiskey man not be afraid to “taint” his bourbon with other ingredients, and feel that they infact enhance their flavour. Smart man, and excellent interview.
